What the ATS check covers

  • Contact block — name, email, phone, location, and at least one profile link in plain text.
  • Section structure — the standard headings parsers look for: Experience, Education, Skills.
  • Headings — clear, consistent headings rather than repeated short lines.
  • Keyword coverage — how many of the top terms from a job description appear in the resume.
  • Formatting safety — tab characters, decorative Unicode, image references, and placeholder text.
  • Readability — sentence length and passive voice, which affect human reviewers more than parsers.
